An Escape from Language into Language: The Internal Exile of Louis Wolfson
This paper aims to show how the life and work of American francophone author Louis Wolfson - who suffered from schizophrenia and underwent a self-imposed exile from his own mother tongue - might serve to illuminate European émigré writers\u27 relationships to multilingualism
Coherent states for a quantum particle on a circle
The coherent states for the quantum particle on the circle are introduced.
The Bargmann representation within the actual treatment provides the
representation of the algebra , where is unitary, which is a
direct consequence of the Heisenberg algebra , but it is
more adequate for the study of the circlular motion.Comment: 23 pages LaTeX, uses ioplppt.st
On the Use of Quantum Algebras in Rotation-Vibration Spectroscopy
A two-parameter deformation of the Lie algebra u is used, in conjunction
with the rotor system and the oscillator system, to generate a model for
rotation-vibration spectroscopy of molecules and nuclei.Comment: 10 pages, Latex File, published in Modern Group Theoretical Methods

Field on Poincare group and quantum description of orientable objects
We propose an approach to the quantum-mechanical description of relativistic
orientable objects. It generalizes Wigner's ideas concerning the treatment of
nonrelativistic orientable objects (in particular, a nonrelativistic rotator)
with the help of two reference frames (space-fixed and body-fixed). A technical
realization of this generalization (for instance, in 3+1 dimensions) amounts to
introducing wave functions that depend on elements of the Poincare group . A
complete set of transformations that test the symmetries of an orientable
object and of the embedding space belongs to the group . All
such transformations can be studied by considering a generalized regular
representation of in the space of scalar functions on the group, ,
that depend on the Minkowski space points as well as on the
orientation variables given by the elements of a matrix .
In particular, the field is a generating function of usual spin-tensor
multicomponent fields. In the theory under consideration, there are four
different types of spinors, and an orientable object is characterized by ten
quantum numbers. We study the corresponding relativistic wave equations and
their symmetry properties.Comment: 46 page
Molecular basis of FIR-mediated c-myc transcriptional control
The far upstream element (FUSE) regulatory system promotes a peak in the concentration of c-Myc during cell cycle. First, the FBP transcriptional activator binds to the FUSE DNA element upstream of the c-myc promoter. Then, FBP recruits its specific repressor (FIR), which acts as an on/off transcriptional switch. Here we describe the molecular basis of FIR recruitment, showing that the tandem RNA recognition motifs of FIR provide a platform for independent FUSE DNA and FBP protein binding and explaining the structural basis of the reversibility of the FBP-FIR interaction. We also show that the physical coupling between FBP and FIR is modulated by a flexible linker positioned sequentially to the recruiting element. Our data explain how the FUSE system precisely regulates c-myc transcription and suggest that a small change in FBP-FIR affinity leads to a substantial effect on c-Myc concentration.MRC Grant-in-aid U11757455
Realizations of Real Low-Dimensional Lie Algebras
Using a new powerful technique based on the notion of megaideal, we construct
a complete set of inequivalent realizations of real Lie algebras of dimension
no greater than four in vector fields on a space of an arbitrary (finite)
number of variables. Our classification amends and essentially generalizes
earlier works on the subject.
Known results on classification of low-dimensional real Lie algebras, their
automorphisms, differentiations, ideals, subalgebras and realizations are
reviewed.Comment: LaTeX2e, 39 pages. Essentially exetended version. Misprints in

A formally verified compiler back-end
This article describes the development and formal verification (proof of
semantic preservation) of a compiler back-end from Cminor (a simple imperative
intermediate language) to PowerPC assembly code, using the Coq proof assistant
both for programming the compiler and for proving its correctness. Such a
verified compiler is useful in the context of formal methods applied to the
certification of critical software: the verification of the compiler guarantees
that the safety properties proved on the source code hold for the executable
compiled code as well
Use of mechanical airway clearance devices in the home by people with neuromuscular disorders: effects on health service use and lifestyle benefits
Background; People with neuromuscular disorders (NMD) exhibit weak coughs and are susceptible to recurrent chest infections and acute respiratory complications, the most frequent reasons for their unplanned hospital admissions. Mechanical insufflation-exsufflation (MI-E) devices are a non-invasive method of increasing peak cough flow, improving cough efficacy, the clearance of secretion and overcoming atelectasis. There is limited published evidence on the impact of home use MI-E devices on health service utilisation. The aims of the study were: to assess the self-reported health and lifestyle benefits experienced as a result of home use of MI-E devices; and evaluate the effects of in-home use of MI-E devices on Emergency Department (ED) presentations, hospital admissions and inpatient length of stay (LOS). Methods: Individuals with NMD who were accessing a home MI-E device provided through Muscular Dystrophy Western Australia were invited to participate in a quantitative survey to obtain information on their experiences and self-assessed changes in respiratory health. An ad-hoc record linkage was performed to extract hospital, ED and mortality data from the Western Australian Department of Health (DOHWA). The main outcome measures were ED presentations, hospital separations and LOS, before and after commencement of home use of an MI-E device. Results: Thirty seven individuals with NMD using a MI-E device at home consented to participate in this study. The majority (73%) of participants reported using the MI-E device daily or weekly at home without medical assistance and 32% had used the machine to resolve a choking episode. The survey highlighted benefits to respiratory function maintenance and the ability to manage increased health care needs at home. Not using a home MI-E device was associated with an increased risk of ED presentations (RR = 1.76, 95% CI 1.1-2.84). The number of hospital separations and LOS reduced after the use of MI-E device, but not significantly. No deaths were observed in participants using the MI-E device at home. Conclusions: Home use of a MI-E device by people living with NMD may have a potential impact on reducing their health service utilisation and risk of death. Future research with greater subject numbers and longer follow-up periods is recommended to enhance this field of study
Molecular Modeling Study for Inhibition Mechanism of Human Chymase and Its Application in Inhibitor Design
Human chymase catalyzes the hydrolysis of peptide bonds. Three chymase inhibitors with very similar chemical structures but highly different inhibitory profiles towards the hydrolase function of chymase were selected with the aim of elucidating the origin of disparities in their biological activities. As a substrate (angiotensin-I) bound crystal structure is not available, molecular docking was performed to dock the substrate into the active site. Molecular dynamics simulations of chymasecomplexes with inhibitors and substrate were performed to calculate the binding orientation of inhibitors and substrate as well as to characterize conformational changes in the active site. The results elucidate details of the 3D chymase structure as well as the importance of K40 in hydrolase function. Binding mode analysis showed that substitution of a heavier Cl atom at the phenyl ring of most active inhibitor produced a great deal of variation in its orientation causing the phosphinate group to interact strongly with residue K40. Dynamics simulations revealed the conformational variation in region of V36-F41upon substrate and inhibitor binding induced a shift in the location of K40 thus changing its interactions with them. Chymase complexes with the most activecompound and substrate were used for development of a hybrid pharmacophore model which was applied in databases screening. Finally, hits which bound well at the active site, exhibited key interactions and favorable electronic properties were identified as possible inhibitors for chymase. This study not only elucidates inhibitorymechanism of chymase inhibitors but also provides key structural insights which will aid in the rational design of novel potent inhibitors of the enzyme. In general, the strategy applied in the current study could be a promising computational approach and may be generally applicable to drug design for other enzymes
